Alex amid turmoils

Alex in Winter. By Tessa Duder. Oxford, 1989. 168 pp. $19.95. (Reviewed by Dianna Leslie) “Alex in Winter” is the thoughtful sequel to “Alex.” Tessa Duder is obviously well in touch with her subject, a 16-year-old Olympic swimming hopeful. She traces Alex’s life in a detailed narration which will capture young readers’ imaginations. The highs and lows in her academic, athletic, and personal life are animated by Duder’s insight and hindsight. Duder was a champion swimmer herself and she represented her country. She is the

mother of four daughters, and is a keen sailor and musician. She cleverly involves the reader and adds more than a dash of dimension to Alex’s life. Alex is faced with the arduous responsibility of overcoming a selector’s bias, the death of her boyfriend, and her own insecurities. However, her intelligence, talent, and determination remain untainted throughout her inner turmoil. It is a publication well worth while for young readers with a sense of immediacy especially contrived for aspiring athletes.
