Mr Chris Gannon, a D.S.I.R. technician, with a 2m custom-built chainsaw he used to cut blocks of ice from the Mt Erebus glacier ice tongue in Antarctica. At rear is Mr Michael Robinson, another D.S.I.R. technician. A U-shaped trench was cut through the 1.7m of ice to the sea. The tongue of ice surrounded by the trench was then pressured until it broke off in a series of experiments to determine the fatigue properties of ice in November.
