Gentle giant has long, easy life
By
KAY FORRESTER
Life for Herbie is no bum steer. Things have gone well for the gentle giant since he was saved from the butcher’s knife by a public appeal eight years ago. Now the 14-year-old Simmental Friesian-cross, which weighs in at 1.5 tonnes, spends his days giving young visitors to Living Springs, at Governor’s Bay, rides on his back. Since he moved to Living Springs about five years ago he has had thousands of children sit on his back, said Mr Irvin Clark, of Living Springs. Herbie’s days seemed numbered when, in 1981,
he was bought at the Addington market, for what was thought to be a record price of $lOB5. The buyer was the Christchurch meat company, Verkerk, Ltd. Upset at the thought of Herbie, a family pet, becoming sausages, the public raised the $lOB5 needed to buy Herbie a new life. He started that life at the Isaac Wildlife Trust Park. Mr Clark said Herbie was fairly spoilt at his present home, happily munching his way through half a bale of hay a day. There is one cloud on Herbie’s horizon: He suffers from sore hooves because of his weight. He is treated with penicillin.
