Latest paint system installed

Brown and Paterson Ltd, one of Christchurch’s largest panelbeating firms, at 114 Hazeldean Road, recently installed a Garmat spray booth and bake oven. This latest technology, which was developed in Belgium, paints motor vehicles to the same standards for colour, gloss and corrosion resistance as when they left the factory under warranty. tinued only if they have been painted using this method, says Mr Peter Paterson, the owner of Brown and Paterson. The bake oven is used for base coat and clear coat paint, which is applied to nearly all vehicles manufactured during the last three years. Mr Paterson says the new method is the only one which should be used for applying base coat and clear coat paint. Unless the method is used,

there is no recourse for owners if problems occur with the repaint later. Brown and Paterson has spent more than $lOO,OOO extending its premises and buying the new equipment. This includes the bake oven, paint mixing room and automatic paint mixer. One of the company’s top painters, Peter Healey, went to the Spartan Car Refinishers Information Centre in Melbourne to learn the latest application techniques for the

new technology

The base coat and clear coat system is made in Australia by Wattyl/Spartan under licence from Akzo/Sikkens of the Netherlands. It is approved by some of the best known motor companies in the world, including 8.M.W., Mercedes Benz, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Ford, Jaguar, Opel, Toyota, Nissan, Volkswagen, Volvo and Porsche. The system has many advantages. The paint is better and harder because

it is baked on. It lasts longer and does not damage as easily as the simple lacquer system used on earlier model cars. The system allows jobs to be completed quickly. Small jobs can be finished in a day instead of three or more days. Brown and Paterson was established 14 years ago. It grew fast and the next year expanded from being a paint shop to include panel work. Three years ago it moved to the present 10,000 square feet premises. It has a staff of 20.
