Police search as trial begins
PA Palmerston North People attending the trial of five men on a joint murder charge which began in the High Court at Palmerston North yesterday were searched by the police before entering the courtroom. A group of gang members waited outside and police patrolled the lower floor of the courthouse as the trial, which had been aborted by the High Court at New Plymouth in September, began. A mis-trial was declared at New Plymouth when it was found jurors knew witnesses and de-
fendants. Accused of murdering Weina Wayne Kahotea at New Plymouth in November last year are Donovan Hori, aged 19, Mervin Thompson, aged 26,Dwayne Torrey, aged 21, Phillip Fox, aged 30, and Kevin Moore, aged 30, all labourers. Brownie Mane, aged 18, unemployed, is charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice. The Court registrar, Mr Bob Seton, said yesterday that gang regalia would not be permitted in the court building. Gang members would be allowed in if they removed patches.
