Equity in education
Sir,—l am glad that the Ministry of Education will in future pay up to, $5OO ,-.a year towards trainee nurses’ travel expenses. This is still miserly when contrasted with the $3OOO a year allowance paid to Maori teacher trainees justfor being partMaori. No justification of special needs applies in the latter case. Is this Mr Goffs idea of equity in education?—Yours, etc., ,W. C. CLARK. November 20, 1989. . . : , [Mr Goff replies:;“The writer refers to a special programme . operating on an interim basis. Its aim is twrecruit more Maori and Pacific Islanders, into teaching to overcome the ; disproportionate under-representation .of those communities in the teaching pro-
fession.”]
