Welcome for new principal
The under-funding of big secondary schools is now something that has to be settled at a political level, says the new principal of Linwood High School, Mr Derek Chapman. Mr Chapman, who will take up his new post in January, said he believed it was nonsense to suggest schools were cheaper to run the bigger they became. He said he would approach the Prime Minister, Mr Palmer, whose Christchurch Central electorate included Linwood, to gain his support next year.
“This school won’t function properly if it’s $lOO,OOO short next year,” Mr Chapman said. A powhiri (welcome) was held at the school yesterday to welcome Mr Chapman, who is deputy principal of Nelson’s Nayland College. The powhiri was also Mr Chapman’s whakaeke (his arrival), said the school’s Maori language teacher, Mrs Ngaire Pohatu.
