Winsloe, Cochrane dominate Beaumont meeting
Otago correspondent The Gore trainers, Ted Winsloe and Rex - Cochrane, both won three races at the Beaumont Racing Club’s meeting at Wingatui last Saturday. Winsloe included the day’s feature, the Palisade Gold Cup, with Vamos A. Beber in his treble, his 1 other winners being Kelly’s Gold and 1 Keekapo. Cochrane won with Ad- 1 miral’s Flight, Coq Au Vin 1 and Dark Slave. The trio ; were ridden by stable 1 jockey Roland Saxton, ! who posted his 100th win ] aboard Coq Au Vin. Vamos A Beber won the ] Palisade Cup decisively < by a long neck for the father and son Gore ; breeders, Martin and John O’Shea. They won a 1 maiden the previous week J at-Riverton Noble - i - Charm, a half-broffler, by 1
State Of Kings, to Vamos A Beber, which literally translated is Spanish for “let’s have a little drink.” They also have a three-year-old half-sister, by War Hawk, to Vamos A Beber and Noble Charm in the Winsloe stable. Vamos A Beber was last on the inner in a closerunning five-horse field until the 500 m when Raymond Bruce improved him four wide. He was challenging for the lead at the 300 m and asserted his superiority after a short tussle with Star Rapier, which was second mostly and alongside pacemaker Noble Pal early in the run home. Noble Pal was third in a gap. His rider, Terry Kennedy, allowed him to take the lead after 500m■ rather than fight him. Winsloe said Vamos A Beber would probably
race next in the Wairio Cup on December 23 at Riverton. Admiral’s Flight came fast, late from last of seven at the 300 m to win the Ashley Powell Memorial Handicap. Basha Feleka ran on' stoutly from three back on the inner for second, clear of favourite Marty, which had raced in second berth on the outer. He shaded the pacemaker, Picable. Cochrane said he would keep Admiral’s Flight to sprinting immediately, but he plans to try him again over ground. Admiral’s Flight, the winner of eight races up to 1400 m for his Dipton breeder, Blair Vickery, has had one run over a middle distance when unplaced over 2200 m in his final race as a-*- four-year-old last seAon.
Coq Au Vin kicked off his racing career with an impressive success last Saturday. Coq Au Vin is a three-year-old by . Palatable from Chic Mellety and
thus a half-brother to Shorty Bijou and Sea Chick. The trio are raced by breeders Henry Ruddenklau, of Dipton, and Betty Sutherland, of Gore. Sea Chick is also trained by Cochrane. Shorty Bijou is with John Phillips, at Winton. Sea Chick is back in work after being served by Imperial Guard. She has won six races, including the main sprint at the Beaumont meeting 12 months ago. Shorty Bijou has won eight, including the 1988 Timaru Cup. He is in the Tapanui Cup next Saturday. Coq Au Vin was last when the field settled, then improved quickly to sixth. He ducked; in sharply 100 m out when challenging the pacemaker, Gold ’N’ Riches, but was in the clear and
went ahead by two lengths. He is the third three-year-old to win this season for Mr Ruddenklau, the others being Surfs Up (with Cochrane) and Cooper’s Creek (with Phillips). Saxton, who completed his apprenticeship in July, has been attached to the Cochrane stable for two years and during that time he has ridden 81 winners. Chris O’Brien, the Wingatui apprentice, made the most of a reprieve to win on Outrage last Saturday. O’Brien was suspended for two riding days (until December 16) for careless riding at the Timaru meeting last Thursday. The suspension was deferred until the end of racing last Saturday.
