An Italian research vessel The Barken left Lyttelton yesterday bound for Antarctica.
The ship has been in port loading scientific equipment and stores for use at the Italian base in Terra Nova Bay.
On board are two helicopters, belonging to the Nelson firm, Helicopters New Zealand, Ltd. The helicopters will be flown by New Zealanders and used to carry scientists and support staff to research areas.
About 100 Italian personnel will travel in the ship to the Antarctic.
