Wage offer angers nurses

Nurses and hospital workers at private hospitals in Canterbury will consider industrial action at a series of stop-work meetings next week.
The joint stop-work meetings have been called to discuss the breakdown of both awards.
Nurses have been angered by a 3 per cent wage offer from employers in response to their claim of 6.25 per cent.
Hospital workers, seeking 6.5 per cent, have been offered 2.5 per cent.
The Canterbury secretary of the Nurses’ Union, Ms Chris Wilson, said nurses felt strongly about staffing ratio and fire safety issues left undiscussed at the conciliation table.
Nurses were seeking a joint management-union committee to air their concerns and seek solutions.
After a fatal Auckland rest home fire, nurses looked at the regulations governing private hospitals and found them wanting.
Employers were also seeking to change provisions relating to part-time workers and change the definition of, a charge nurse, Ms Wilson said. Awara talks broke down in Christchurch on November 17.
