AUSTRALIA Bargain hunters push up prices

NZPA-AAP Sydney Renewed buying interest in leading issues and afternoon bargain-hunting pushed the Australian sharemarket to a stronger close yesterday. The all-ordinaries index finished 7J points up at 1607.5, from its early low at 1597.8. “It is encouraging to see fresh buying in the leaders in view of all the gloom and doom we have had recently,” a Capel Court Powell broker, Mr John Paterson, said. The stronger close however, “may only be a temporary uptick,” he said. The all-industrials index jumped 9.7 points to 2543.6, the all-resources rose 5 points to 896.6 and the gold marker 4.3 points to 1768.4. National turnover totalled 87.45 million shares, worth sAustl9l.62M, with falls exceeding rises by 214 to 151. Bond Media closed 3c firmer at 18, but was off its high for the day of 19c. On Tuesday, Bond Media sank sc, amid speculation that Mr Kerry Packer was preparing to make a bid for it. Bond Media said, however, it was considering issuing new capital to help meet its sAust2ooM debt to Mr Packer. Meanwhile, Bond Corporation shed 2c to 28 and Bell Resources 10c to 66, amid speculation that there might be other offers for Bond Corporations brewing interests. at a lower price than Lion Nathan’s sAust2.s billion bid, brokers said. Elsewhere among the entrepreneurial investors, Asteam was down 4c to 736 and Elders IXL 3c to 221. In a stronger industrial sector, market leader, BHP, jumped 18c to 886, CSR 6c to 506 and Pacific Dunlop 9c to 466. News Corporation gained 30c to 1330. Brambles led the transport sector higher, with a jump of 35c to 1265, while Mayne Nickless was up 4c to 604 and TNT steady at 283. Banks were mostly firmer. National Australia rose 4c to 678, as did ANZ to 552, while Westpac gained 6c to 526. In a stronger resources sector, CRA gained 10c to 1075. and MIM 7c to 223. Western Mining was down 12c on turnover of 3 million shares.
