Hector’s dolphin

Sir,—The annual complaint by S.N.A.G. about Hector’s dolphin numbers, and set net limitations, is pathetic. A number of independent and credible surveys have now been documented regarding this seriously endangered species. It is time to act in favour of conservation, not to argue its merits. Numerous parallels can be drawn here, i.e. the ozone problem, greenhouse warming, tropical rainforest destruction, etc. For far too long the exploiters of this world have gone unchecked. The damage has been catastrophic. Possibly irreversible. Those who doubt the action being taken to correct these issues, both locally and globally, should also doubt their own intelligence.—Yours, etc.,

P. J. BARRETT. November 18, 1989.
