PA Auckland The Tobacco Institute has contradicted Wellington Medical School researcher who said that passive smoking causes 273 deaths a year. An institute paper said
scientific evidence did not support a strong link between passive smoking and heart disease, and only a minority of studies (six out of 23) had. . The institute’s executive director, Mr Michael
Thompson, said the medical school study released in May, which said that 243 deaths would be caused by heart disease and 30 by lung disease, was based on “misapplied statistics.”
