Yodeller on tour

By

RICHARD CRESSWELL

One of Australia’s leading country and western singers learned to yodel on the farm where he grew up in Victoria and now combines the sound with his guitar playing. Wayne Horsburgh is in New Zealand to tour clubs and perform in Christchurch for the tenth anniversary of the Old Time Country Music Association.

He has toured the United States, throughout Australia, and Britain, and also works on cruise ships from Australia and in the Caribbean.

"I love travelling and meeting

people, so the work on the ships is great,” he said. Mr Horsburgh plays in workingmen’s clubs and other venues, and learned to play the guitar when aged eight.

He is critical of commercial radio stations in New Zealand and to a certain extent in Australia where country and western does not get a lot of support. “But it depends on the song and how it is recorded.” He has found some of his yodelling songs popular. Mr Horsburgh will be Australia’s representative at this year’s Gold Guitar Awards in Gore.
