Guide leader plans retirement projects

By

SUSAN COOK

After almost eight years as commissioner of the country’s largest Girt Guide province, Mrs Edna Hanafin is looking forward to her retirement.

“As one retires from a busy appointment, you think to yourself ‘What am I going to do,’ but I have several projects inmind, and my garden will certainly be pleased to see me back,” said Mrs Hanafin.

During her term as provincial commissioner, Mrs Hanafin has overseen several important projects for Canterbury Guides. The addition of the O’Rorke dining room to the Barn, part of the Cracroft Complex, as well as new ablution facilities and a meeting room are a

“tremendous asset,” said Mrs Hanafin.

A camping ground for the use of all youth organisations has also been recently developed by the Girl Guide Association. Mrs Hanafin has celebrated the sixtieth birthday of Canterbury guiding and the seventy-fifth anniversary of guiding in New Zealand as provincial commissioner.

She has had the opportunity to meet many interesting people, including members of the Royal family and the Honourable Mrs Jervois Clay, daughter of the BadenPowells.

Mrs Hanafin says she is ready to settle down and spend time catching up on correspondence and indulging in pottery.
