France explodes nuclear device

PA Wellington France exploded a nuclear device at Fangataufa in French Polynesia yesterday. This was the third nuclear test in the present series, the D.S.I.R. said.

The underground nuclear explosion, recorded on the D.S.I.R. seismograph at Rarotonga at 6.29 a.m. (New Zealand time) had a detonation yield of 30 kilotons, it said.

The other two tests of this series were 25kt on October 24 and 20kt on October 31. The Minister of Disarmament and Arms Control, Ms Wilde, yesterday reiterated the Government’s opposition to French nuclear testing in the South Pacific. She said the French knew only too well that all Pacific Forum countries opposed the programme.
