East German swimmer ‘retires’
NZPA-Reuter East Berlin The East German, Kristin Otto, one of the most successful swimers of all time, has retired, the youth newspaper “Junge Welt” reported yesterday. Otto, aged 23, who won six gold
medals at the 1988 Olympics, and seven world and eight European championship titles, told “Junge Welt” in an interview that her decision was final. “I felt at the European championships in Bonn (last August) that I
had reached the limits of my capabilities,” Otto said. “Junge Welt” reported on Saturday that Otto was afraid to go out in public because of threats made towards her and other sporting stars.
