Three points separate four women’s teams

Sydenham and Lancaster Park scored outright wins in the women’s cricket competition on Saturday at Porritt Park, although both trailed their opposition after the first innings. In the morning session, Riccarton declared quickly after passing the Lancaster Park first innings total. Batting a second time, Lancaster Park was hampered by an injury to the international, Nicki Turner, but again was given a solid start by its top order.

Sarah Helmore who drove attractively, headed the scoring with 51 while Trudy Anderson and Andrea Walker made useful contributions iri the twenties.

However, after bringing up the hundred for the loss of just two wickets the team collapsed to be all out for 130.

For Riccarton the steady medium pace bowler, Debbie Ford finished with' the remarkable figures of five for eight off 11 overs. Requiring 117 to win,- Riccarton suffered an uncharacteristic batting lapse, and was bundled out for 58 with only Katrina Withers (19) reaching double figures. The innings was ripped apart by the splendid efforts of Sara McLauchlan and Rebecca Millichip who bowled almost unchanged, collecting nine wickets between them. McLauchlan’s pacy leg cutters accounted for six. While Lancaster Park was bowling itself to victory, Sydenham achieved its win against St Albans with the bat.

Early in the day it lost the battle for first innings points, but later in the day won the war for outright victory. With an advantage of 41 on the first innings, St Albans declared its second innings closed at 121 for 4 with most of its runs coming from the openers, Anna McKenna (46) and Vicki Burtt (30): ’ Sydenham, needing 163 in 70 minutes and 20 ove£, was

given a fine start by Andrea Devine (36) and Toni Watts (41). The momentum was maintained by Maia Lewis (26) and later by the captain, Jennifer Turner (25 n. 0.) who steered the side through to a well judged win with two overs to spare. The results of Saturday's games have had a concertina effect on the points table with only three points now between first and fourth. St Albans 16, Sydenham 16, Lancaster Park 13, Riccarton 13.
