Authority of Canadian

Suburbs’ Canadian import Lise Jubenville’s performance set the platform for her side’s 10-1 win against United in the Radio Avon premier

women’s softball competition at Cuthberts Green on Saturday. Jubenville fielded with complete authority throughout, featuring in a double play in the sixth and a magnificent relay throw from deep in centre-field to have United’s Lottie Andrew comfortably out at third. Not only did Jubenville contribute to the fielding, her contribution with the bat was equally outstanding, picking up three triples, batting .750 for the match, and she was credited with four R. 8.1.5.

In what was expected to be a closely-fought clash, Suburbs ran away with the match. However, it took until the top of the seventh for it to obtain an unassailable lead. It was not until the sixth that Suburbs dominated, as going into this innings, Suburbs held only a tenuous 2-1. lead.

The top of the first produced Suburbs first ran when Karen Pimm, who is proving invaluable as lead off, picked up a triple and scored off another triple, this time off the bat ot Lise Jubenville. United immediately tied the ball game up as Chris Stuart came in off a Tracey Dale sacrifice having made base on a left field double. The deadlock was broken in the third. Again it was the Pimm/Jubenville duo that did the damage. Pimm made base on an error and again came in on a Jubenville triple.

The match remained tight for the following two innings as both fields took batters out with ease. Then with two down in the top of the sixth,

Suburbs edged ahead by a further two runs when a Maria Johnstone triple bought in Tracey Ellis. Johnstone in turn scored off a . Sheryl Dann drive. Jubenville extinguished all hope for United in the bottom of the sixth with a great double and her side was on the rampage in the seventh when her triple bought in the lead oft, Di Jennings and Vicky Calder. Jubenville then came in off a drive by the designated hitter, Sue McCullough, and was followed across the plate by McCullough, Johnstone and Dann. Papanui 13, Monowai 6 This was a marathon match which lasted just more than ly? hours. A huge total of 27 hits were conceded. Earlier in the season, Monowai provided a shock win against Papanui and looked set after its first turn at bat to put the pressure on again. But it was a short-lived contest as Papanui had no difficulty in batting and its field made fewer errors than Monowai. Monowai was the first into the batter’s box and a series of good hits and one major error in the outfield allowed Mo Ruraku, Helen Williams, Chari McLean and Marlene Fox to all score.

Papanui came out fighting in the bottom of the frame going through its order, plus three to set itself up for victory as it ran in eight runs, seven of which were scored before an out was taken. < Albion 2, Suburbs 1

After the previous close encounter between these two sides, and Albion’s recent outings being far from convincing, Albion was looking for a convincing win. However, it was not to be, as the Suburbs field, although making some expensive errors, prevented Albion from taking control of the match.

The top of the first produced some heart-stopping moments for Albion as Suburbs lead-off, Karen Pimm, made base on a walk,

second on Albion’s only error of the match and third on a Vicky Calder sacrifice. With just one down, the pitcher, Cheryl Kemp, combined with Terina Stokes, took Pimm out on a play back and shut Suburbs out of an early lead. The shock appeared to bring Albion alive as it immediately replied at the bottom of the frame by bringing in two runs. The flurry was short-lived as Albion failed to score past the point While Albion let scoring opportunities go begging in its third and fourth turns at bat. Suburbs on the other hand did not have a runner, past the first innings, make base until the seventh. Burnside 16, Papanui 1 This was a decidedly onesided .match with Burnside dominating from the onset and never letting up throughout its four turns at bat. The match was highlighted by Burnside’s home runs with the game commencing by lead off Kylie Stevens picking > up a rightfield homer and concluding in exactly the same manner. For Papanui, the trips to the batter’s box proved far from productive as the side collected a meager two hits, while its sole ran came on a series of errors. Sue Connolly made it all the way to second on an error, third on a pass ball and home on another infield error, with the run coming in the third. In the top of the first, there were three earned runs for Bumside. It began with a Stevens home run. She was followed home by Mandy Karatau off a Helen Townsend safe bunt, with Townsend in turn scoring when Jo McNichol droye to left field. Burnside went through its order in the second with the highlight being a centrefield drive of Perreau’s, scoring Steven, Karatau and Townsend. Also scoring were Raelene Forde, Chris John and Perreau
