VOLLEYBALL Hornby High School won the boys’ section and Christchurch Girls’ High School won the girls’ at the Canterbury secondary schools junior volleyball tournament. played at Pioneer Stadium on Friday and Saturday. Twelve Boys and .sixteen girls teams took part. Hornby completely dominated the boys’ section, playing at a level above all other teams during the tournament. Hornby beat Riccarton, 2-0 (15-11, 15-0) in the semifinals and accounted for Shirley Boys’ 2-0 (15-7, 15-7) in the final. Shirley attacked well at times but could not match the variety or power of Hornby’s attack. Scott Smith adjudged the most valuable boy player of the tournament, and Brent Margetts were the two best Hornby players. Petivia Taugofe also showed excellent touch in the final. For Shirley, Daniel Hellier played with determination. Riccarton High School with Ross Anthony — dominating, was the best of the other teams.

Cashmere also had its moments, only missing out on a semi-final shot on a points countback.

The girls’ section was much closer with little separating the top sides. Christchurch Girls’, the top seed, beat Linwood 2-0 in one semi-final although the powerful serving of Lau Frueqn almost bought Linwood victory in the second set.

Hornby A beat the surprise package of the tournament, Hornby B in the other semifinal. Hornby A went into the final as slight favourites having beaten Girls’ High in a close match in section play, 2-0.

The final was another close affair. Hornby with some strong serving from Nicole Woodgate and Kelly Burgess came from behind to win the first set, 15-11.

Christchurch Girls’, with solid play from Amy Keith and Joane Mullany, took the second set comfortably 15-7. Hornby took an early 11-4 lead in the final set, but Girls’ High with some excellent serving by Anna Drummond, selected as the most valuable girl player at the tournament, fought back to deservedly take the set, 15-13 and the game 2-1.

In the play-bff for third and fourth the strong serving Linwood team beat the young Hornby B team, 2-0. Hillmorton which improved during the tournament, beat Riccarton which had been unlucky to be in the same section as Girls’ High and Hornby A, 2-1 in the play-off for fifth and sixth.
