Go Bush successful

PA Palmerston North Go Bush, from Woodville, gained a last-gasp victory over outsider Lagerfeld in the Central Districts Turf Club Handicap, main event at the Rangitikei Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday. The big grey was ninth mostly, and took some time working clear on the turn. He powered home to get up in the last stride, beating Lagerfeld by half a neck.

He was ridden by Noel Harris and is trained by his brother, John, but the family connection does not end there.

Go Bush is raced by their father Jock, in partnership with the horse’s Pahiatua breeder, “Boke” Smith. The latter raced Go Bush’s dam Pukewhai,

which was trained at Woodville by Jock and John Harris.

A big Three Legs six-, year-old, Go Bush has now won nine of his 27 races, and there are big plans for him in the near future. John Harris intends starting him in the $llO,OOO DB Counties Cup on December 2. After that he could go on to the Avondale and Auckland Cups. Alternatively, he could be tempted to take Go Bush to Sydney for Christmas racing. Lagerfeld attempted to lead air the way and held on strongly for his second, just half a head in front of the topweight, Classic Bay; which was always handy. Serestrina came

home well to be half a neck back next. Noel Harris was shooting for four wins on end when he rode Soubrette in the Sheep and Wool Handicap, but had to be content with second behind Mr Kite. Soubrette came from the back with a powerful finish, but Mr Kite had a v handy break and held her out by half a length. His rider, Maree Lyndon, would have gained some satisfaction, having been just pipped on Lagerfeld by Harris and Go Bush earlier. Soubrette’s stablemate, Infantry, took charge on the turn and finished third, three-quarters of a length away, with Beaufort Light and Kotahi Jim close up next
