Latham sees fixture as cricket trial
The Canterbury cricket captain, Rod Latham, sees the 50pver fixture against Otago in Oamaru tomorrow as “still a trial game." Canterbury’s Shell Trophy side is not being named until Monday and Latham said one or two places were still up for grabs. “It should be a good workout for the guys, it’s a chance to get some first-class bowling,” Latham said. The Otago attack will include both the former New Zealand left-arm spinner, Stephen Boock, and the economical left-arm fast-medium bowler, Peter Hills, but will be missing the professional, Neil Mallender, who does not arrive from England until a fortnight later. From past experience Latham expects a fairly flat track for the match. “Centennial Park is normally a batters’ wicket; it’s a good one-day track,” he said. The teams are.— Canterbury: Rod Latham (captain), Blair Hartland, Darrin Murray, Paul McEwan, Chris Harris, Peter Kennedy, Lee Germon,'Mark Priest, Richard Petrie, Stu Roberts, Chris Flanagan, Roger Ford. Otago: Kevin Bums (captain), Peter Dobbs, Michael Austen, Ken Rutherford, Bruce Blair, Alan Bligh, Richard Hoskin, Shane Robinson, Vaughn Johnson, Peter Hills, Stephen Boock, Aaron Gale
