Nuclear test Another French nuclear test was detected yesterday by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research seismic-moni-toring station in the Cook Islands. The explosion, estimated to have a yield of 20 kilotonnes, was the second within a week. The Minister for Disarmament and Arms Control, Ms Wilde, said the test probably took place on Mururoa Atoll. Car destroyed A man with his hair and clothes on fire was seen running from a burning vehicle in Auckland yesterday. East Tamaki residents saw the man running away with his long hair and jacket ablaze. The Ford Telstar which was stolen on Tuesday night from outside a McDonald’s restaurant while the owner was at a birthday party, was destroyed. — PA. Youths burnt Two youths have been transferred to Hutt Hospital’s burns unit with severe flashbums received while tampering with an electricity . transformer in Napier on Tuesday. The two are Chris McLean and Sonny Ngerengere. They were thrown several feet by a blast about 3.45 p.m. The youths are both aged 17. It was a painful reminder of a near tragedy for Mr McLean who, five years ago, received serious facial bums when a firework exploded in his face. — PA. Youth bitten A youth, aged 17, was bitten by a police dog during an incident at a West Auckland dairy on Tuesday. The youth was seen breaking into a dairy in Blockhouse Bay and when the police arrived had piled fireworks outside the dairy and was heading back for more. He refused to come out and a police dog was sent in. The youth was bitten on both forearms. He was charged with burglary. — PA Writing award An Ashburton College sixth former, Caroline Lucas, has won the Peter Smart Memorial Award for writing. The award is offered to students at Canterbury and West Coast secondary schools for a portfolio of writing. Joanna Malcolm, a sixth-former at Avondale Girls’ High School, and Christina Sheard, a sixth former at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, were highly commended.
