Police join U2 fans
By
PATRICK McLENAN
More than 100 police will be on crowd control at Saturday evening’s U2 concert at Lancaster Park, the venue officer, Inspector John Coomber, said yesterday.
He said the police contingent would be far outnumbered by the crowd, expected to be more than 50,000. The police were used to covering rock concerts, however, and it was “down to tactics and police officers using their scones.”
The promoters had also ar-
ranged for a large number of security officers to assist on gates and at strategic positions in the ground. Alcohol, glass and fireworks would be banned at the concert, Mr Coomber said. Cassette recorders and cameras were also not allowed, and any person attempting to enter the park with them would be asked to dump them or risk having them confiscated.
Mr Coomber warned that ticket-holders could be subject to personal or bag searches at the concert gates.
