Mill River standing on the edge of success

Auckland correspondent The Avondale mare, Mill River, should be sufficiently seasoned to return to winning form in the C.B. Clarke Memorial, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at her local meeting this evening. A sister to good stayer Te Akau Prince, Mill River has had two starts this campaign for a firstup midfield placing in the Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Pukekohe and a sound second to Rusty Boy over 2000 metres at Ellerslie, on October 19. The Clarke Memorial is another 2000-metre event and from barrier six Mill River should be able to take up a handy position without much exertion. Trained by part-owner Warren Adams, Mill River was not asked to try a middle-distance until late in her last campaign. Her previous form over sprints and “miles” had been most consistent and when stepped up in journey she won first-up over 2050 metres at Ruakaka and completed a double when scoring at Avondale. Mill River was put aside last term after running a creditable seventh to Plume d’Or Veille in the Oliver Nicholson Handicap (2400 m at Ellerslie in May.
