CYCLING Stuart Lowe recorded the fastest time in the Canterbury Time Trial Association's 16km event on Tuesday evening, narrowly beating Brian Fowler and Jason Smith. Lowe’s time of 22min 35s was one of the fastest this season, and was only two seconds quicker than Fowler’s time. Moderate north-west winds made for a warm evening and a large turnout of riders. Chris Nicholson was fourth fastest of the evening in 22min 475. Jenny Rose posted the fastest women’s time with 25:42, 23s faster than Wendy Duder and Katrina Stewart. Geoff Inwood again recorded the fastest veteran's time of 24:29. Two people attempted the 40km course, Brian Penwell recording 64.42 and John Arthur 67.28. Results.— Senior: S. Scott slipped away from the field with Hamish Ferguson, 1600 m from the finish. By the bell lap, Scott had pedalled away to lead Ferguson by 10m and the field by 70m. The bunch sprint failed to catch Scott, but William Rastrick managed to pass Ferguson for second place. Carlos Marryatt hit the limelight for the evening by winning the 3200 m handicap race with a strong ride from the scratch mark to narrowly beat Chris Barnsley and Mark Lucas. The 1600 m handicap race benefited the middle markers with Hamish Upston edging out Craig Mclntyre and Craig Denny. Results — Open grade Cup races.— 1600 m handicap:.
