TV horror video prompts complaint

A Christchurch woman has complained to TVNZ on the showing of a PGR-rated horror video on its G-rated “3.45 Live” programme this week. Mrs Sue Johnson said her three daughters, aged four, seven and nine, were watching the programme when the full 15minute version of Michael Jackson’s video clip, “Thriller” was shown.
There were subtitles that said the clip’s contents could be disturbing to some viewers, but one of her daughters said she did not know it would be so scary until she had watched it.
“What concerns me is we didn’t have the opportunity to turn it off or explain it. It just ran,” Mrs Johnson said. The three girls had nightmares after watching “Thriller,”. Mrs Johnson described as “more weird and horrifying than violent.” She rang the director of “3.45 Live,” who apologised and accepted her criticism of the decision to run the clip on the
children’s programme. She hoped the incident would not become a precedent. Neither the producer nor the director of “3.45 Live” was available for comment last evening.
