Glass toy could be lethal
PA Wellington A potentially lethal Taiwanese toy which has put English consumer watchdogs on the alert could be available in New Zealand.
The glass toy, called the Hand Boiler, contains methanol, a poisonous chemical which can be fatal if swallowed. The coloured chemical is contained in two glass bulbs connected by a 15cm tube. Body heat causes the methanol to rise up within the tube when the toy is held in the hand.
Consumer organisations in England have warned the thin glass could shatter easily and the toy should not be allowed into the home. Neither the Ministry of Consumer Affairs nor the Consumers’ Institute knew if the toy was available in New Zealand.
