Cycleway
Sir—l was surprised to read (October 21) that Mairehau High School is to make wearing helmets compulsory for cyclists next year. The concern for cyclists’ safety would be better demonstrated by forcing the cyclists to use the Burwood motorway cycleway (Innes RoadTravis Road extensions). I have been appalled by its lack of use by all cyclists. A recent accident on the motorway would not have happened if the cyclist was on the cycleway. I am also surprised that the Ministry of Transport does not actively force cyclists to use the cycleway.— Yours, etc., G. A. JEFFREYS. October 21, 1989.
