Japanese study social services

A group of Japanese people have spent the last two days visiting Christchurch social service agencies and picking up ideas that could be used in their country. The delegation’s leader, Mr Mamoru Suzuki, said the 28 people all had vast experience in social welfare but little knowledge of the New Zealand system.

Two areas of particular interest were services for the elderly and the disabled. Mr Suzuki said Japan and New Zealand faced a similar situation with their increasing older population. He said the New Zea-

land Government took more responsibility for people’s retirement, with a much more comprehensive superannuation scheme. Fees in retirement homes and social welfare facilities were also cheaper. The Japanese delegation yesterday visited the Social Welfare Department’s district offices in Hereford Street.

They also spent some time at St Andrew’s College, the Kingslea Resource Centre, the Canterbury Aged People’s Welfare Council, the Crippled Children’s Society and Presbyterian Support Services.
