New church in harmony with surroundings

The First Church of Christ, Scientist, recently moved into its new home at Carlton Mill Road, a site on the banks of the Avon River overlooking Hagley Park. Construction of the building started a year ago and the first service in the new building took place on August 27. Designing the church placed certain demands on Warren and Mahoney Architects, Ltd: The building had to express an atmosphere of tranquillity enhanced by the natural surroundings and the church also wanted the building to be as simple as possible, to reflect the non-symbolic philosophy and simple service of the Christian Science religion. Because of the church’s religious outlook, it will not disclose the cost of the building and this is also the reason why the building will not have a formal opening ceremony.

The Christian Science Reading Room, a Sunday school, and auditorium are features of the complex. The reading room is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and from 11.15 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Seventy-five years ago the church opened its first building in Christchurch in Latimer Square. In 1929, the church moved to a building in Worcester Street. This was extended during the 1930 s and remained home to the church until its recent move. About 100 people regularly attend the church’s services in Christchurch. Members of the public are welcome to view the complex at any time the reading room is open.
