Daly comes up roses
By
GARRY FERRIS
Rosie Franco, given a good trip by Lisa Daly, ran out a comfortable winner of the fourth heat of the Canterburey Cadet Area junior drivers’ series at the Addington trials yesterday. The four-year-old daughter of Nero’s 8.8.— Ripper’s Delight was settled into the “one-one” sit yesterday by Daly as last week’s heat winner, Cran Dalgety controlled the pace in the 2600 m event with Commander Clarrie.
Daly moved Rosie Franco out three wide at the 400 m to get around the tiring Star Choc (in the open), but did not ask for a big effort until straightening. The pair quickly ran past Commander Clarrie and gathered in Rocheteau, which had enjoyed a good trail behind the leader throughout for Steven Evans, inside the 150 m.
They raced away to score by two lengths, easing down, with Rocheteau a length ahead of First Byrd, which finished on
for Ray Sharpe, and Commander Clarrie next. The heat, sponsored by Addington Raceway, was paced in a leisurely 3:30.7, the 400 m in 29.9. Rosie Franco has not fared well in the barrier draw for the Capri Motors Pace, a maiden event at the Waikouaiti meeting on Saturday, but the roomy track should aid her cause. Daly was attached to the West Melton stable of lan Shinn, the trainer of Rosie Franco, but now works out of the Peter Ryder stable. Harman, trained by her present employer, took her to within a neck of her first race win when beaten into second place at the Banks Peninsula meeting at Motukarara on October 7. Results: Addington Raceway Junior Drivers Series (Heat 4), $490; CO (penalty-free); junior drivers; 2600 m— Rosie Franco fr (L. Daly) 1, Rocheteau fr 2, First Byrd fr 3. Nine ran. Commander Clarrie fourth. 2L, IL, >/£hd. Time: 3:30.7 (800 m in 61.2, 400 m in 29.9). Trainer: I. Shinn.
