CANOEING Richard Boyle, with consistently fine paddling, led a strong field of Kayakers to finish first over all in the Matthews Challenge Cup race held in Lyttelton harbour on Monday. Boyle was closely pressed by his club mates, Richard Phillips and Alan Roxburgh, who were second and third, respectively. Roxburgh's challenge for the over-all title brought him a well deserved win in the down river racer section and a drubbing for the second and third placegetters, Richard Wyatt and Don Hurley. The two veteran sections were won by experienced paddlers. Peter Sullivan in the cruising section put in a very strong paddle to win from Bruce Bunny and Andrew Carson. The ski section winner, Eric Leask, headed home his brother Brett after taking the lead around Quail Island. Jo Wyatt again showed her depth of experience to handle the trying conditions, taking first place in the women’s section from Jo Stevens, who pursued her throughout the race to lose by 11 sec. Stevens, however, was awarded the Matthews Cup. The race was over an Bkm course from Corsair Bay around Quail Island and return. A moderate south-westerly wind and some choppy water conditions

resulted in three early withdrawals and gave the contestants a trying and testing race. Men.— Down rivers racers: A. Roxburgh, 37min 20s, 1; R.Wyatt, 40:14, 2; D. Hurley, 40:14.5, 3. Ski: R. Many track riders are now turning up for the time trials, in an attempt to gain strength and speed for the early national championships this year.
