Call for focus on police on beat

PA Wellington Community policing will; have to become a more important part of police policy, says the Police Association’s president, Mr Keith Morrow, who is standing down after six years. Mr Morrow said that the public was becoming more outspoken on what was wanted from the police. “It is a partnership — the wishes of the community should be taken into account.” Mr Morrow said this involvement from the public was illustrated in the case of the Wellington police launch, where more than 40,000 Wellington residents signed a petition to prevent it going to Auckland. “We are going to see more and more of that, and I think it is good.”

Mr Morrow said the “mobile model” — with police officers patrolling in cars — had not been a big success. Increased community policing would be expensive in terms of human resources, he said. There was only one alternative, and that was increased numbers. With a record number of officers leaving the force, plus staff cuts, the police were under immense pressure.
