Canty cycling hopes beaten
PA Auckland The Canterbury cyclists Willie Rastrick and John Andrews, in their first outings on the new Manukau velodrome on Sunday, were beaten by unheralded northerners. The Canterbury duo, who hold New Zealand sprint hopes at the Commonwealth Games, lost in their speciality event to Andrew Monkley (Waikato) and Anthony Brown (Auckland). The weather curtailed much of Sunday’s programme (after all racing on Saturday had been washed out). Only the novice sprint — won impressively by top Southland rider Stuart Mac Lean from Daniel Beatson (W.C.N.1.) — were decided.
