Double taste of success

Two Canterbury trainers produced winners at both Gore and Rangiora yesterday.

Neil Coulbeck produced Pallette to win the Burkes Maiden at Rangiora, giving Les Didharn his first winning ride this season and Cinnamon Slew won for Coulbeck at Gore. Jim Melton had his third win for the weekend when Amadera won the Coupland Maiden at Rangiora. Amadera is raced by her breeders, Mr and Mrs John Bowden, who are associated with last year’s New Zealand Cup winner, Gallipoli. Amadera’s sire, Escudero, left just the one foal. Amadera’s dam, Amarena, won one race from Ned Thistoll’s stable before going amiss. Melton won the Gore Cup on Saturday with Walk Up, and Star Day was successful for him at that meeting yesterday. Melton originally came south as foreman for Paddy Busuttin and has met with success since shifting to Ashburton to train on his own account, Spardeck and Lord And Master being other good performers from his stable. Melton was at Gore yesterday and Amadera was in the care of fellow MidCanterbury trainer Jan Hay.
