Cup candidates to pay expenses

The Melbourne CUp candidates, Fleetward Lad and Shannon Lad, will attract most interest when they strive to pay their Australian expenses in the F.R. Bodie Memorial Cup Trial at Te Rapa today. Both horses will need to produce encouraging efforts for them to head across the Tasman and in the case of Fleetward Lad this looks likely. He will handle the heavy ground better than Shannon Lad. A six-year-old son of Sir Fleet, Fleetward Lad has come up well this campaign with wins over 1575 m at Ellerslie on September 9 and over 2100 m (Whakatane Cup) at Tauranga a fortnight later. He has caused his owner-trainer, Bob Manning, some concern since with a hoof problem, but should still be fit enough to be a leading prospect today. Shannon Lad has faced an uphill battle this campaign as the wet tracks, which he dislikes, have continued. This has naturally plagued his build-up and caused concern in his camp. Secret Mission, St Rupert, High Interest, Tour Blade and Stanley look the ones set to fight out the finish of the Gold and Ivory 1600, which completes the T.A.B. double. Secret Mission is a bold front-runner which, has won twice at Te Rapa. He should take some wearing down in the conditions.
