Optimist skippers show resilience

The Optimist skippers displayed tremendous resilience in light winds for the morning races during the Oborns Nautical Canterbury age-group regatta at Stewarts Gully Sailing Club yesterday. The light conditions early in the day gave skippers the chance to flaunt their skills although a breeze settled during the afternoon’s racing.

Nichola Church was competing in her first major event and she made a quick recovery after being violently ill after the third race to finish the under 10 class.

Mistakes proved devastating in the P class as the light winds played havoc with tactics. The first boat finished only seven seconds within the allowed time limit and several did not complete the course.

Mathew Stechman (Echo) was in sound form to win three races and earn a

second. Results: Starling (11 starters).— Open: Pure Magic, Milton Bloomfield (C.Y.M.8.C.) I; Moonlight Shadow, Samuel Mason (C.8.Y.C.) 2; Sudden Surge, Alister Rowlands (C.Y.M.8.C.) 3.
