Jimmy Peau sets sights on Tyson after title win

NZPA Sydney The former New Zealand amateur champion Jimmy (Thunder) Peau has his sights set on Mike Tyson’s world heavyweight crown after winning his first professional boxing title. “I am ready to take on the world,” Peau, who has adopted the name Thunder since moving his base to Melbourne, said after scoring a thrilling win over August Tanuvasa at the Melbourne Showgrounds on Friday night

He won the Orient Pacific Boxing Federation heavyweight title with a technical knockout win in the fifth

round to add to his Commonwealth Games gold medal as an amateur. The win has guaranteed Peau a World Boxing Council ranking of between 20 and 25. Tanuvasa gave him the title when he surrendered during the fifth round after both of his eyes became badly swollen. He later claimed that he could not see properly. Tanuvasa opened the fight with a barrage of combination punches. He was the smaller of the two, but he was certainly not afraid of Peau’s awesome reputation. Peau was clearly shaken

by the hard punches but he managed to weather the storm.

“I was expecting that because it’s New Zealand style,” Peau said of Tanuvasa’s opening round. “But I didn’t think I was going to cop that many punches. He’s a good fighter.” Peau rebounded in the second round and went on to dominate the fight Tanuvasa, exhausted and disorientated, sealed his fate by calling an end to the fight two minutes 21 seconds into the fifth round.

A former missionary, Tanuvasa had defeated Peau as an amateur in New Zealand four years ago.
