Travis Swamp
Sir,—During the reports from San Francisco of the recent earthquake, a comment was made that the collapsed buildings on the marina had been “built on fill.” Couple that with statements made by seismologists that our alpine fault is almost identical with the San Andreas fault, and severely under stress, and we have another excellent reason why Travis Swairip development should be stopped in its tracks.
We are being warned yet again that a powerful earthquake can strike New Zealand at any time. High-risk situations must be avoided at all. cost and stringent provisions in the regional and district schemes introduced to prevent such folly as the development of unsuitable areas for residential use.—Yours, etc., ANNE FLANAGAN, North New Brighton Community Council. October 19, 1989.
