Abandoned pup makes good
Toby, who stars as the leading canine, Reilly, in “Piece of Cake” (tonight at 8.,30 on One), was starving on the streets before he was “discovered” and made into a TV celebrity. As a puppy he was abandoned in a supermarket car park, left tied to a post without food or water, until an animal trainer found him and spotted his star potential. Now the four-year-old mongrel can not only be seen in “Piece of Cake” but in other series, such as “Bergerac” and “All Creatures Great and Small,” and in numerous British TV commercials.
As Reilly, he is Squadron Leader Rex’s loyal pet and is designated the Hornet Squadron mascot. Known as “one-take Toby” during filming because of his excellent performances, he was pampered daily by the cast and crew, had his own hair and make-up artists, and a special period-piece collar. Tim Woodward, who plays Reilly’s master, Squadron Leader Rex, says of Toby, “In many ways he was more professional than I was. I hope to pick up an award for Best Supporting Human in the Canine Oscars.”
