Statue of Fraser for Govt buildings

PA Wellington Mr Peter Fraser is to return to Wellington next year to take a permanent spot outside his former workplace — the old wooden Government Buildings which now house the Ministry of Education. A bronze statue of the former Labour Prime Minister has been made in Britain and will be put on its permanent site as part of the 1990 activities. As well as being a Prime Minister he held the education portfolio during his parliamentary term from 1918 until his death in 1950.

Made by a former New Zealander, Mr Tony Stones, the statue stands

240 cm high; whereas Mr Fraser’s real height was 170 cm. Statues needed to be larger than life to create the best effect, Mr Stones said. Life-size statues looked “puny.”

The statue is now on show at New Zealand House, London. Mr Stones spent six months working on the statue. It was made first in clay; a plaster cast came next, then it was cast in bronze.

Mr Stones, who was born in England, worked for Television New Zealand as a designer for 20 years before returning to England in 1983 to realise his ambition of becoming a full-time sculptor.
