Clark will not seek post on regional council

The former Christchurch City Council Labour leader, Cr Alex Clark, has decided not to seek the chairmanship of the new Canterbury Regional Council. The decision follows Cr Clark’s notice of resignation from the Labour Party on Friday — only days after being elected by 22,000 voters to the City Council and Regional Council on a Labour ticket. Cr Clark was later asked by Labour Party officials to reconsider his decision to resign. Yesterday he told “The Press” he would make his final decision known later this afternoon. Cr Clark said yesterday he had not yet made that decision. He would today explain the reasons for initially tendering his resignation but would not go into these in great detail. Cr Clark yesterday gave lack of council support as the reason for not standing for the $83,000 chairmanship.
“If I didn’t rejoin the party I wouldn’t have had the support. It was also quite clear that if I continued, the support would not have been there,” he said. Cr Clark said he was still fully prepared to play his part as a member of the new council.
