Thief thwarts Games rider
The Commonwealth Games build up of Sally Fraser (above) has been hindered by a bicycle thief. The Canterbury cyclist’s cus-tom-made training bike was stolen on Friday from Sunnyside Hospital, where she works, two weeks before her preparation for the Games gets into top gear.
Miss Fraser will ride in the road race at Auckland and will be forced to train on her racing cycle if the training bicycle does not turn up.
“If I don’t get it back within three or four days it’s going to be a bit of a worry,” she said. “It’s not insured and I really can’t afford to get another one.” The cycle is valued at about $lBOO and was made for Miss Fraser by an American two years ago. She has ridden in the United States on it
Miss Fraser averages about 400 km a week in training, mainly on the Port Hills.
“It’s the only transport I’ve got as well,” she said.
