A brawl between two flatmates has left a Mid-Canterbury horse trainer fighting for his life in Christchurch Hospital. Bevan John Lawes had emergency neurosurgery last evening after being taken to Christchurch Hospital by ambulance from Ashburton. He is in a critical condition. Mr Lawes was knocked unconscious during a fight with his flatmate, a man aged 36, at their
Beach Road, Ashburton, address on Friday evening. He recovered, but his condition deteriorated during the week-end and he lapsed into unconsciousness yesterday morning, said Detective Senior-Sergeant Alan Dalzell of the Christchurch C. 1.8. The flatmate had been interviewed and further inquiries were being made before a decision would be made on charges, he said. The fight occurred about 9 p.m.
after an argument. Both had been drinking. Mr Lawes showered and went to bdd after the incident, but called a doctor on Saturday morning. He stayed with friends on Saturday evening, who called a doctor when his condition worsened on Sunday morning. No weapons were involved in the fight. The men had known each other for some time.
