Brawl leaves man fighting for life

A brawl between two flatmates has left a Mid-Canterbury horse trainer fighting for his life in Christchurch Hospital. Bevan John Lawes had emergency neurosurgery last evening after being taken to Christchurch Hospital by ambulance from Ashburton. He is in a critical condition. Mr Lawes was knocked unconscious during a fight with his flatmate, a man aged 36, at their

He recovered, but his condition deteriorated during the week-end and he lapsed into unconsciousness yesterday morning, said Detective Senior-Sergeant Alan Dalzell of the Christchurch C. 1.8. The flatmate had been interviewed and further inquiries were being made before a decision would be made on charges, he said. The fight occurred about 9 p.m.
