Cycling success for Aust.
NZPA-AAP \Wollongong Matthew Bazzano and the Austrlaian Hampshire team sewed up the Commonwealth Bank • Cycle Classic yesterday after 1000 km of racing. Bazzano, who has been tour leader for the last three days, won the tour by 3min 13s, from Simon Lillistone (England-Sut-tons) and Vladimir Golushko (U.S.S.R.-Smirnoff). The Hampshire team, of which the 20-year-old Bazzano is a member along with Barney St George, the 1986 tour winner, Andrew Logan, Clayton Stevenson and Brett Dutton, easily won the team trophy. Vladimir Golusko (U.S.S.R.Smirnoff) won the sprints points trophy, while team-mate Dmitri Pjanikh was named King of the Mountains. Bazzano was rewarded again just after the race finish when the Australian Cycling Federation president, Ray Godkin, named him as a member of the Australian road team for the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, replacing Scott Sunderland who is turning professional. Bazzano, who took the tour lead on Friday on the 183 km stage from Forster to Newcastle, was immediately put under the protective wing of his four teammates who defended his position every inch of the way. The classic yesterday wound up with a time trial at The Rocks in Sydney and a criterium in Wollongong.
