Italian plane for Ice due in Chch

By NIGEL MALTHUS The first Italian Air Force aircraft to take part in Antarctic flights will arrive in Christchurch tomorrow, ready to do four return trips to the Ice. The Hercules aircraft will arrive at Christchurch airport about 5 p.m., to join the pool of American and New Zealand planes on the summer Antarctic supply run.

It will bring cargo for the Italian base in Antarctica, and an advance party to prepare for the Italian summer research programme. The bulk of the Italian effort will again be shipborne, with a vessel due to arrive at Lyttelton in November.

The Christchurch Airport Company will try to persuade the: Italians to join the Antarctic Gateway. Centre project. The airport company’s chief executive, Mr George Bellew, said he had already outlined to the Italian Air Force the advantages of having a permanent base if they were going to run regular flights.
