Shed break-in Two burglars were disturbed after they had broken into a shed at Addington Raceway on Thursday. The offenders, European and Maori youths, were seen lurking at 7.40 p.m. They dropped a bag containing tools from the shed, and ran off. Accident help A motor-cyclist would have died at the scene of an accident yesterday but for the actions of St Albans residents. The man suffered serious injuries when his machine collided with an oncoming car on Cranford Street at 6.15 a.m. Residents attended to the man until the ambulance arrived. “They were marvellous. They did all the right things,” said Traffic Senior-Sergeant lan Freeman. The man suffered multiple injuries. His name and condition were not available from Christchurch Hospital last evening. Heroin found Midnight raids by Tauranga police and Customs officers on houses in the Bay of Plenty broke up a heroin importation ring and uncovered more than a quarter of a kilogram of the class-A drug, police said. The heroin, believed to have a street value of about $280,000, was high grade and imported from Southeast Asia. Trade pact out The Minister of Overseas Trade and Marketing, Mr Moore, has rejected a call from a businessman, Mr Hugh Fletcher, for a free trade agreement linking New Zealand, Australia and Canada. New Zealand wholeheartedly supported all moves towards freer trade, said Mr Moore, but a three-way free trade agreement was not realistic at the moment. Mr Fletcher said in Canada this month that Canada should look for a free trade agreement with New Zealand and Australia to complement its recently signed pact with the United States.—PA. Bavadra ill The deposed Fiji Prime Minister, Dr Timoci Bavadra, has been readmitted to Auckland Hospital with a chest infection. Dr Bavadra is recuperating in Auckland from surgery to remove a cancerous lesion from his back. Auckland Hospital sources yesterday said Dr Bavadra’s condition had not improved. Shearers’ rates Shearers and shedhands have agreed on new wage rates after drawn-out negotiations with employers. The employers’ advocate, Mr Hugh Philbert, said agreement had been reached after an informal meeting between the union and employers. The two parties are expected to sign an agreement next Thursday. Machine shearers will now get paid $5 per hundred sheep, equal to a 7.1 per cent increase. Shedhands, cooks and pressers’ rates increased 4.28 per cent, and the crutching rate increased 6 per cent.—PA. Nurse charged A psychopaedic male nurse has been charged with assault after an alleged attack on a female resident at Mangere Hospital. The nurse had been dismissed by the Auckland Area Health Board after an internal inquiry. The woman was allegedly found unconscious after the incident this month.
