Man jailed after receiving turtle
A man who admitted receiving a stolen turtle valued at $4OO was sentenced in the District Court to one year’s imprisonment for that and seven other crimes.
Mark Peter Rapana, aged 28, unemployed, pleaded guilty to receiving the turtle, reckless driving, possession of a knife, drunk driving, refusing to accompany a Ministry of Transport officer, resisting arrest, and careless driving.
He was also found guilty, after a jury trial,
on a charge of driving in a manner which endangered transport. The turtle, which he received in Nelson, was stolen from a Nelson aquarium. Defence counsel, Mr David Ruth, said a sentence of imprisonment was not warranted because Rapana had made efforts to settle down and overcome his drug addiction.
Judge Hattaway sentenced Rapana to 12 months imprisonment and disqualified him from driving for 18 months.
