Good season
The Rangi Ruru Girls’ School first hockey XI has completed one of its most successful seasons. The side played 45 games during the season,’ including the Christchurch senior reserve■ and senior grades, and lost only seven, five of them in the local grades. Rangi Ruru played 25 matches against schools and lost only two of those. It scored 116 goals in the school matches and conceded 23. Rangi’s only losses were to Longbay College of Auckland in the final of a tournament played in Auckland, and to Waimea College of Nelson at a South Island
secondary schoolgirls’ tournament in Nelson in August. Among teams which Rangi Ruru beat in the Auckland tournament were two from Australia. In its 45 games, Rangi Ruru scored 168 goals and conceded 50. The team’s coach, Don Percy, said the success of the side was due to its ability to score goals. In other years the Rangi Ruru team had played well, but had not been able to convert as many of the scoring chances
that it created. Unfortunately seven of the team are leaving school this year and an eighth will be overseas next season on a student exchange. The Rangi Ruru team from left (front) is: Gabrielle Reekie, Anne Warden, Melinda Lucas (captain), Adrienne Lynn. (Middle), Julia Todhunter, Nicole Bannan, Sarah Helmore, Jane Seay, Melanie Purchas, Emma Leech, Sarah Lynn. (Back), Tania Percy, Meredith Ferraby.
